More couples marrying abroad

With the unpredictable British weather and increase in low-cost flights, more and more couples in the UK are planning their weddings abroad.

A poll carried out by First Choice Travel Shops and Holiday Hypermarkets found that 57 per cent of Brits would consider getting married abroad, with the biggest reason being to try and stop family feuds breaking out on the big day.

Figures show that the average cost of a UK wedding is almost six times the cost of a wedding overseas. Of the 2,571 people asked those who married abroad spent £520 on average, compared to the average cost of a wedding in the UK, which stands at around £11,000.

Peter Staddon, a spokesperson for Biba, said: "What with low cost airlines offering great deals for superb locations, there is an increase in overseas weddings.

"The Caribbean and the Mediterranean islands are seen as good locations."

As well as being more expensive, almost 80 per cent say they think a traditional white wedding is also more stressful to organise than nuptials in the Caribbean.
