Honeymooners recycle their way to USA

An enterprising couple have paid for their honeymoon as well as helping the planet by collecting rubbish and recycling it.

Having realised they could convert Tesco clubcard points into air miles, John and Ann Till collected bottles and cans and deposited them in exchange for points, the Telegraph reported.

A few months later, the pair had earned enough air miles to fly to the US and promptly had their wedding in their Hampshire hometown of Petersfield.

They sailed to New York on the Queen Mary 2 and also visited Denver, Colorado and Nashville, Tennessee before finally using their hard-earned vouchers to fly home from Atlanta.

Mr Till told the newspaper: "We wanted to make our honeymoon special and were trying to think of ways to raise money for it.

"We worked out that it would be possible to turn rubbish into our flights - as long as we had enough."

Tesco spokesman David Nieberg praised anybody who recycles, but added "if it helped them go on their honeymoon, even better – we congratulate them on that".

The supermarket has cut plastic bag use in its stores by 40 per cent in the last two years.
