14/11/2008
Hailed as the "hidden Caribbean", Cape Verde looks set to become the new destination hotspot for loved-up newlyweds.
With its cultural mix and stunning beaches, the former Portuguese colony offers couples the exotic beauty of the Caribbean at a fraction of the cost.
David Else, Lonely Planet author, said: "The most popular attractions are the beaches, long clean beautiful and warm beaches. It's been described as the hidden Caribbean.
"Until five or ten years ago, this destination was unknown to most British tourists and what people are discovering is a set of islands which is as near as Gambia but offer a mix of Portuguese, African and Brazilian style atmosphere."
According to the BuyAssociation, property prices in Cape Verde have soared by nearly 20 per cent during 2006.
The region gained independence in 1975 and consists of ten main islands and five islets. It is renowned for water sports such as wind surfing and sail boarding.
