Istanbul increasingly popular with travelling couples

Istanbul's "glorious heritage" is a key attraction for couples jetting off on a romantic getaway or a cultural honeymoon off the beaten track, it has been said.

Ozgul Ozkan Yavuz, director of events and organisations for Istanbul2010, stated that the city has grown increasingly popular with British tourists "because of its contemporary capacity of creative cultures and its young and dynamic population".

"Istanbul used to be the capital city of three empires and it has always been an important site as the centre of three religions," she explained.

According to the Republic of Turkey's Ministry of Culture and Tourism's report, the number of foreigners arriving in Turkey in January-September 2008 increased by 13.29 per cent when compared with the same period of last year.

With its abundance of museums, art galleries, buzzing nightlife and fine dining restaurants, Istanbul offers couples a rich diversity of attractions for a special trip away.
