Staff 'feel forced' to attend work Christmas parties

Employees feel obliged to attend their office Christmas party, despite dreading having to socialise with their colleagues, experts say.

Behavioural psychologist Jo Hemmings said that workers are afraid they might get into an "uncomfortable situation" if they attend such functions.

"These are people they work with and its fine in a working environment but put them in a social situation after a few drinks, you have a false environment and potentially something which is deadly dull or dangerous in a sense of what you might say or do," she explained.

"It is putting colleagues into a party atmosphere and being forced to have fun which forces most people grief, being stuck with someone they don't want to be with."

Recent research from the British Greyhound Racing Board indicated that 36 per cent of people find the work Christmas party boring, while 28 per cent often feel out of place.
