Baby joy for first class student
26/06/2009
A student who gave birth to a baby girl within hours of finishing her university final exams has been awarded a first-class degree.
Kate Archer gave birth to her first child, Grace, less than 24 hours after sitting her examination.
The 28-year-old was later awarded a first-class honours degree in Business Management and Law by the Aberdeen University.
During her pregnancy, Kate had completed a 20,000-word dissertation and three pieces of coursework, besides managing three part-time jobs.
Her partner Mark Evans, a 22-year-old marine engineer in the North Sea, said he was very proud of her.
Kate said: "I actually had some mini contractions while I was in the exam, but I thought nothing of it, I just remembered being very hot and thinking I might faint. Because my bump was so big I had trouble reaching my desk and I had to sit at an angle.
"At the late stages of the pregnancy I was always talking to Grace telling her 'not yet, not yet' and I was just hoping she would wait till I had finished the exams," she added.
