Couples forced to take 'minimoons'
09/07/2009
Honeymoons have been shortened to "minimoons", according to a survey which has revealed that 77% of couples are reducing the duration of their trips to less than two weeks.
The survey, carried out by Hotels.com, revealed that 30% of couples blamed financial pressure for forcing them to cut short their trip to a week or less.
Alison Couper, the group`s communications director, said: "A honeymoon is an important part of getting married and we're not surprised to see that people would rather downsize their trip than not go at all."
The survey also found that while 57% would take off for their minimoon right after the wedding, 28% of newlyweds would wait a few weeks before heading off, and an equal number planned on taking a short break straight away, but would go on a longer trip later.
Meanwhile, 17% of those questioned said they intended to shell out about £4,000 and 27% planned to spend between £1,000 and £2,000 on a honeymoon.
Beach and city breaks were the most favoured types of trip, with only 6% of couples planning an adventurous honeymoon, the survey showed.
About half of the couples said they would go to a long-haul destination, while 9% planned to stay in the UK.
