Wedding day and wedding night lingerie

Your choice of sensual or provocative lingerie should make you look and feel amazing and could even make your wedding night go with even more of a bang (if you know what I mean!)

What to wear under your wedding dress

Your body shape and choice of dress will dictate what kind of lingerie you should wear. A strapless dress will need a strapless bra, corset or basque and is perhaps not the ideal choice for the more buxom among us as there is less support without straps. For smaller busted brides the strapless dress and bra is ideal and an exquisite strapless bridal corset or basque can make you look and feel very feminine and sexy. Those with ample bosom can create an hourglass shape by wearing a dress with straps or sleeves, a corset-style Victorian bodice with shoulder straps being the ideal shape to show off your curves, allowing you to choose from a strapped bra for support or a bridal corset or basque with straps that will remain hidden under your dress.

Plain or silky styles are best worn under slim-fitting or sheer fabrics whereas larger, fuller-skirted dresses or those with boned bodices can be worn with suitably racy lacey numbers hidden beneath the layers! If you are adamant that you don’t want to wear a bra, then discreet and delicate self-adhesive nipple petals are a must. They will cover the entire nipple area - a must for brides wearing sheer silk or satin dresses, particularly in cooler weather - you don’t want to ‘stand out’ in your wedding photos!

Surprise your groom!

If you want to surprise your new husband then a pair of personalised knickers could be just the thing! Silky satin panties with either ‘Bride’ embroidered in diamantes or your new name ‘Mrs. Smith’ could be a real winner.

Hoops and underskirts

Hoops and underskirts were very fashionable a hundred or more years ago and for this reason many brides still wear them to give a fuller-skirted vintage look to a dress. A hoop can make sitting and going to the powder room a little more difficult so it’s worth taking this into consideration before you set your heart on a hoop. Wearing layer upon layer of underskirt can give an amazing look to a dress but those heavy layers can be hot in midsummer so you may find you don’t need stockings under a heavy layered skirt if the weather is particularly warm.

Unusual necklines

For dresses with unusual necklines or low backs multi-way bras or adhesive bras may be the answer. Multi-way bras will wrap around one shoulder for asymmetrical dresses or around your waist for low-backed dresses. For backless dresses, adhesive bras are completely strapless and backless and work by sticking the cups directly to your breasts. It’s worth trialing them before the big day to ensure that they’re right for you. You don’t want to take any risks with your underwear on your wedding day.

Stockings, suspenders and garters

Stockings and suspender belts have a classic sexy look and feel about them and are so much more comfortable - not to mention attractive - than tights. Hold ups are great on slim legs but beware if you have heavy thighs as you might find they don’t stay up so well and the last thing you want on your wedding day is falling hosiery! And of course that essential wedding item the garter is the perfect finishing touch to your bridal lingerie. Many bride’s ‘something blue’ takes the form of a baby blue satin trimmed garter, the significance of this colour being that it represents constancy and loyalty and is also an old biblical symbol of purity.

Sexy surprises for your wedding night

If you want to leave the ‘virginal bride’ look to your wedding day and turn into a vixen for your new husband on your wedding night then there are plenty of exciting ways to thrill him! He could unbutton the back of your bridal gown to reveal to a lacey basque and thong or you could change from your white or ivory bridal day lingerie into something black or even red for your wedding night as a surprise. French knickers and camisoles or teddies are pretty and sexy while basques and corsets give that vintage sexy style a la Dita Von Tees… Ask your groom what his favourite look is as you may be surprised.

For the groom’s eyes only – some tips on buying your lady lingerie

If you’re a groom who’d like to surprise your bride with some beautiful lingerie, either for your wedding night or for your honeymoon, then there are a few things to take into consideration before you make that purchase. It’s best not to get her lingerie for the wedding day as her dress will dictate exactly what style of lingerie she will need, be it strapless, backless or corsetted. Instead surprise her with something for the wedding night that she can take away on honeymoon. First things first – make sure you get her size right – there’s nothing worse than a partner giving you a size 8 outfit when you’re a size 14 who wishes you could be a size 8. Take a sneaky peek at her current undies and note the size of her bra and knickers (the bra will have a number and a letter or two, such as 32A or 36DD – make sure you get the UK measurements here which will be 30 or 40-something. Her briefs will be by dress size so look out for a number between 6 and 26 here, the most usual being 12, 14 or 16. When it comes to colour, you should ideally choose a colour you think she will feel comfortable in, not just a colour you’d like to see her in. Red and black may be your fantasy but it’s not every girl’s first choice of colour for lingerie. If she has a drawer full of soft pinks and whites then try getting her a pink, peach or ivory set perhaps. Whatever you buy make it look special by presenting it wrapped in a ribbon-tied box and she’ll love you forever – but then she should do anyway if you’re getting married!
