Gothic couple marry in graveyard
17/11/2009
A gothic couple fulfilled their dream of marrying in a cemetery, becoming the first in the UK to have their wedding blessed in a graveyard.
Samantha Smyth and 33-year-old Paul Adams were wed by a Spiritualist minister in their local graveyard - Wisbech General Cemetery - surrounded by 40 family and friends in the ancient disused stone chapel on the four-acre site.
The blessing was held eight months after they were married in a traditional register office, as they realised a wedding ceremony at the unlikely venue would not be legally recognised.
Dressed in a white gown speckled with strips of red material, 25-year-old Samantha added a black fur coat and black flowers to complete her ensemble.
The mother-of-three said her friends thought she was mad after she told them of plans to have the £2000 wedding in a graveyard.
She said: "My dad, who is a hardcore Catholic didn't believe me when I told him but when I showed him the site - he just said to do whatever made me happy."
"We had a wonderful day and it was actually very peaceful and tranquil with all the graves and trees sweeping over the chapel."
