'Miracle baby' for elderly couple
18/11/2009
A 43-year-old grandmother has given birth to a 'miracle' baby 13 years after being 'doubly sterilised'.
Debbie Amos underwent sterilisation after having three children, but three months ago she discovered that she was pregnant again.
After feeling strange movements in her stomach, she took tests that showed her to be six months pregnant.
Debbie and her 57-year-old husband Melvyn, from Colchester, Essex, are now proud parents of Connor - a healthy 8lbs 8oz baby.
Debbie said: "At the end of July, I started feeling tired and felt movements in my stomach. I thought I could feel something - I thought it was wind at first but I thought I better do a test.
"I thought it must be a big mistake. When I showed my husband he said, "Whose is that?". I didn't really believe it until he came out."
At the time of their marriage, when Debbie was 19, the couple could not conceive due to her irregular menstrual cycle and had to take a fertility drug to speed up ovulation.
Later she had three children - Kerry, now 24, Glen, 19 and Rebecca, 16.
She then underwent sterilisation in which her fallopian tubes were both cauterised and clipped.
