If your wedding date is set for summertime or is a year or more away, then you should send out Save the Date cards to ensure your friends and family keep that date free and don’t book their summer holiday for that week.

The very first thing on your wedding To Do list should be to set a budget. Once you know how much you can spend then you can get on and book everything and have some real fun with your wedding planning. Decide on an overall theme or colour scheme and who you would like to ask to be your bridesmaids, chief bridesmaid, flower girls or even best woman. Your fiancé needs to decide who he’d like to choose to be his best man and ushers. You might want to have a night out or a dinner party where you ask these people to be part of your bridal party.

Once you’ve set the date and agreed a budget you can book your venues. If you’d like a church wedding then you should make an appointment to see your local vicar. If it’s a civil wedding you’re planning then you should decide whether you’d like to marry at a register office, in a local licensed hotel or in another licensed wedding venue such as a stately home, castle, zoo or even sports ground. It’s fun to visit a couple of venues to compare rooms and rates until you get a feel for the one that’s right for you. Ask the venues about room hire charges, capacity, catering, and if they offer food and wine sampling. Don’t pay the full charge until after your wedding day but do pay a deposit and ask for a contract to protect your booking. It’s a good idea to take out wedding insurance at this time as it’s a small price to pay for peace of mind should anything not quite go to plan.

The next important booking to make is your photographer. Do your research online and then go to meet them before making your booking. Ask about digital photography, black and white and reportage style shots as well as the more formal traditional group shots.
