Muriel marks 100th birthday at home

A woman has celebrated her 100th birthday recently in the house she has been living at for the last 96 years.

Muriel Noyce's family moved into the two-bedroom terrace in Romsey, Hampshire, in August 1914 before the First World War, when she was just four years old.

Unmarried Muriel was the youngest of the family that consisted of her parents and ten siblings.

The house was rented out at ten shillings or 50p a week, which was worth only £400 back then but would cost £225,000 today.

She recollects that at the time the house was a little cramped for space at bedtime and she used to sleep head-to-toe in a double bed with her siblings.

The former typist and cinema usher said: "Things have changed. When I was younger there was a butcher and a baker and a coal yard in the street, and they have all gone.

"You didn't have to lock your front door in those days and people were polite to you."

Muriel now lives in the house with her three cats after the death of her sister, Elvira five years ago.
