Railway Children birthday marked

A special birthday production of The Railway Children is to be staged at the former Eurostar terminal at Waterloo Station over the summer.

It will mark the 40th anniversary of Lionel Jeffries' famous 1970 movie adaptation of the much-loved children's book by E Nesbit.

The film - which starred Jenny Agutter, Dinah Sheridan, Sally Thomsett and Bernard Cribbins - continues to be the best-known adaptation of the classic tale.

Mike Kenny's latest dramatisation for the stage will be performed in a custom-designed auditorium. The action will take place on the original railway track and adjacent platforms at the station, while the audience will be seated on either side of the track.

A saloon carriage used in the original movie and a period steam train from the National Railway Museum in York will also feature in the production.

First published in 1906, the The Railway Children has been adapted several times for the stage and screen.

The story revolves around three children - Bobby, Peter and Phyllis - who move from London to a cottage in rural Yorkshire after their father is mysteriously taken away. They become friendly with a local station porter and embark on a magical journey.
