Getting married in Thailand

Long-established as a luxurious honeymoon destination with some of the world’s best hotels, Thailand offers the perfect backdrop for a romantic beach wedding.

What’s the flight time?

12-13 hours

What’s the time difference?

GMT +7

Do I need a visa to enter the country?

No.

What’s the wedding paperwork?

  • Residency Allow at least 3 working days for the legal formalities to be completed.
  • Proof of ID You will need to provide your original birth certificates and valid passports .
  • Divorced You must produce original evidence that previous marriages have been dissolved (Decree Absolute).
  • Widowed You will be required to produce the death certificate of your former spouse.
  • Age restrictions You must be 18 to marry in Thailand.

How do I obtain a marriage licence?

You must complete a certificate at the British Embassy in Bangkok (for address, see Where can I find further information?), attesting that you are single and free to marry under Thai law. The certificate then has to be translated into Thai -- tour operators can arrange this.

Your British and Thai declarations now need to be signed in the presence of the consular officer at the Embassy, who will then notarise the documents. Next take the statement and translations to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (see Where can I find further information?) where the signature of the British Consular is authenticated. This normally takes 48 hours. You can then marry at any Register Office in Thailand.
