Food & drink
Marrying abroad? Here’s how to make sure the wedding food and drink are as memorable as the day itself...
Look at the wedding menus
If you've chosen a wedding package with a hotel, some or all of the catering is likely to be included in the price. Make sure you like the menus available before you book your wedding, and ensure that the venue can cater for any necessary dietary requirements. When you arrive at your destination, organise a tasting so that you know exactly what you and your guests are going to be served.
If you've chosen to have your reception in a restaurant, chances are you have visited the area before. Again, be sure to check the menus before you make your booking and organise a tasting when you arrive.
As with any wedding, it's also hugely important to make sure you know exactly what is included in the price. You may, for example, want to order additional wine or soft drinks.
Let them eat cake
When it comes to your wedding cake, you have the option of taking a cake with you, or having it made abroad (or both -- there's nothing wrong with having two cakes!).
If a particular style or design is important to you, it may be wise to have it made close to home. It's crucial to tell your cake designer that you plan to take your cake abroad as it will affect the design and filling of the cake. Sponge cake, for example, is not appropriate as it should be made only a few days before the wedding. Equally, a delicate design is unlikely to survive a trip to the airport and a plane journey. Your cake designer will create something that will travel well and will also package it for the journey. Again, this is something you need to discuss with the airline, as your cake clearly needs to travel as hand luggage.
Having a cake made abroad can be a wonderful idea as it gives you the opportunity to enjoy something that is traditional to the country you're visiting. An Italian wedding cake, for example, is delicious and a great talking point for those planning to marry in Italy.
