How to look your best, from those in the know
Q: Errol, what are the key modern-day bridal hair looks -- for both short and longer length hair?
A: Sassier styles are all the rage. Accessories, feathers, sewn-in braids and pearls and beads (to reflect the dress) are all becoming popular. The traditional look is still strong and we get lots of brides who come to our salon asking for their hair to be dressed with flowers.
Q: What tips and advice would you offer to someone choosing their bridal hairstyle?
A: If you're not used to having your hair up and if you've got a long face, then avoid styles that are piled up too high. If you have a round face or an overly strong jaw, adding width won't be flattering. Instead opt for a look that works as a mini facelift, pulling the skin a little as you pull the hair back. If you are doing it yourself, don't try to style (up) freshly washed hair.
Q: Which comes first, the hairstyle or the tiara?
A: The accessories/veil/tiara need to be taken into account when deciding on the hairstyle, and the hairstyle needs to be taken into account when deciding on the accessories. I think if you've fallen in love with a style, finalise that first and if you find a butterfly clip to die for then take it to the salon for the first consultation.
Q: How do you know if a hairdresser is right?
A: The consultation is free and is the time when you the bride need to tell your hairdresser everything about the dress, the type of event, even the flowers. You may have bridal hair pics you want to show and discuss and do take in any pics of the dress you have. Make sure they have understood everything and ask for their advice -- see if you like what they suggest.
Then you will have a trial look with them, which you pay for, and this is the time to iron out any worries that you have. Take a digital pic of the finished look so that you can reassure yourself as the day comes nearer that you will get exactly what you have agreed upon together.
