The good bra guide

The good bra guide

Wearing a beautiful and well-fitting bra will help you to feel comfortable and secure during your wedding day, while looking suitably sexy and alluring for your wedding night!

Always get fitted

The style of bra you choose will depend on the cut of your dress (see below). As soon as you’ve decided on your dress, buy the bra you’re going to wear in time for your first fitting, so that your dress can be measured around your underwear.

The right size bra will give you support, a flattering shape and ensure that your dress fits properly. Many women make the mistake of buying bras that are too big around the rib cage or too small in the cup, which can create “four-breast syndrome” - breasts spilling over the cup -- and ruin your look. Plus bras can differ in fit and size according to the make and brand. So it’s not safe to assume the size you are in one brand will hold true for another.

Bra fittings are free and available in the lingerie department of most department stores, such as Debenhams and John Lewis. Take your time during your fitting, until you’re satisfied that your fitter has found you a bra that feels comfortable.

Safe and secure

Your wedding underwear plays a vital role in making you feel and look your best. The last thing your want to be worrying about is whether everything is staying in place! Once you’ve tried on a bra, don’t just stand still in it. Walk around; raise your arms and so on. It’s important to see if it’s still comfortable when you’re moving about, as this is what you’ll be doing as you meet and greet guests.

What style should I buy?

There’s a vast array of styles available now, from minimiser to push up. Your bra provides the foundation for your dress, so you need to consider which bra is appropriate for what you’re wearing. If you’ve chosen a strapless dress, you’ll need a strapless bra or basque: the latter is great for creating a smooth line under dresses and because they’re boned, you can wear them without straps and still feel supported.

For fitted or sheer dresses or bodices choose a smooth bra, for white or sheer materials go for flesh tones and to ensure your bra is invisible under white or pale-coloured tops, a nude colour may be better than white.
