I knew about the ring because I'd chosen it, but he had told me that as it was being made and wouldn't be ready for a few months. One Saturday several weeks later he booked our favourite restaurant and a very exclusive hotel about 40 miles away, but as I was feeling a bit ill I decided I didn't want to go. He put up some resistance but agreed in the end (I didn't know he was going to propose). The next morning I woke up and found he had put a little jewellery box in my hand while I was sleeping - my engagement ring. It was such a surprise I cried and it was far better than any swanky restaurant anyway.
