Siobhan and Gavin

We have been together almost 5 years and living together for 4. It was the end of year 2000 and the start of 2001, 12.01 a.m. to be exact, when Gavin proposed to me. We had decided to visit his sister in Bedfordshire on New Year's Eve, as he hadn't seen her at Christmas.

Once there, we all decided to play Risk and I noticed there was a Christmas cracker on the dining table, to which I thought, "ah that's sweet he saved the last cracker for us to pull to celebrate the last day of 2000 and the 1st day of the new year." As the chimes of Big Ben were ringing in the New Year, we pulled the cracker. As we pulled it a box fell out, and me being quite stupid said, "Oh look that's nice. Expensive crackers. They have put a ring in there," and bearing in mind they were 'A Bug's Life' crackers I immediately started looking for the joke and paper hat. That's when Gavin spun me around and said "Shiv, it's an engagement ring. Will you marry me?" I think he was nervous because he forgot to get down on knee, so his sister said "Oh, erm, come on Richard," and grabbed her husband and ran out of the room to leave us in peace. I looked at Gavin and burst into tears, and hugged him for about 5-10 minutes. I still hadn't said yes, so when I finally let go and he said, "So is it a yes or a no, because I need to know if the ring fits." I said yes. Then his sister came into the room and looked at us and said, "Well, do I have a sister-in-law?" We both said yes and then we all hugged each other. I was still crying when I telephoned my parents. They were very happy. Our evening came to an end by watching the fireworks of the New Year. I will never forget the feeling, and can't wait to be Mrs. Gavin Lawrence on the 2nd August 2003.
