When are the best and worst times to get married?

Around 300,000 people in the UK get married every year, whether its bare foot on the beach, or a church wedding followed by a lavish reception. Either way, some things remain very predictable, such as the dates on which we get engaged, although actual wedding dates were much more surprising!

The most romantic dates (for proposals) over the last 3 years were:
  • Christmas Day
  • New Year's Eve
  • Valentine's Day
  • 29th Feb - Leap Year ( When the ladies pop the question! )
When it comes to tying the knot, traditional spring/summer weddings are a thing of the past, with autumn being a much more popular time to get married. The most popular wedding dates (in descending order) are as follows:
  • First weekend in September
  • Second weekend in September
  • First weekend in August
  • Second weekend in August
  • Last weekend in July
  • First weekend in July
  • Last weekend in August


The average length of time between getting engaged and getting married is 18 months and most couples (76%) have known each other for over 2 years by the time they get engaged.
