I'm having four bridesmaids - three friends and my sister. I'm not all that close to my sister and would prefer one of my friends to sign the register. I think my sister will expect to. How should I tackle this?

I would suggest talking to her privately, explaining what you have decided and telling her what a hard decision it has been.
You could soften the blow by asking her to do another job such as doing a reading or showing people to tables at the reception.
