Emma's answers to Remembering my parents

Question

Both my parents have passed away and I was wondering if it would be acceptable for us to have two empty places with flowers on the top table as a mark of respect.

Answer

Remembering your parents on your wedding day is a lovely idea. However I'm not sure about having empty places at the top table; it could be quite upsetting for you to see the empty places, and may be awkward for whomever is sitting next to these seats.

I would have a word with the vicar who will be marrying you and ask if he can say a few words during the service or perhaps ask a close friend or family member to do a reading, to let them know that you are always thinking of them. Then at the reception why not ask anyone who is doing a speech to mention them, even raise a toast to absent friends? You might like to make a montage of photos of your family and your partner's family for your guests to look at too. I'm sure that they will be remembered fondly on the day.
