Emma's answers to Can I get married in a church outside my parish?

Question

I've fallen in love with a little church in a quiet little village in the country. The problem is this isn't my parish, so where do I stand?

Answer

It is possible to get married outside your own parish, but only with the vicar's consent - though it's unlikely they will consent if your only reason is that you like the look of the outside of the building. If you have some connection to the church, such as your family still lives within the parish or you were baptised there then this will be taken into account. You will probably have to attend a service at your chosen church at least 18 times before you can marry in it. You can either visit it once a week or once a month, as long as you do this 18 times, and that you are there when your banns are read. See our religious weddings advice and ideas section for more information.
