Emma's answers to Which name do I use?

Question

I am getting remarried in August this year. I am a divorcee who has never converted back to my maiden name. We are due to attend the registrar next week to give notice of our intention to marry. Can I provide my ID in my married name and obviously have that entered on our marriage certificate but stand at the altar and the minister address me in my maiden name? This would make my family and myself feel more comfortable than being addressed in front of the congregation in my ex-married name.

Answer

Once you are divorced, you are entitled to revert to your maiden name legally, without the need for any other documentation other than your decree
absolute. You will need to take this document to the registrar when you give notice, along with your birth certificate. The decree absolute basically states that your are no longer 'Mrs Married' so you can give notice in your maiden name if that is the name you wish to use on the day.
