Emma's answers to Outfit for mother in law to be

Question

My mil2b is about a size 22. She doesn't have a lot of money to spend on her outfit so we are going to take her shopping when she next comes to visit us. We're not sure where to take her and whether we should offer to put some money towards her outfit.

Answer

Check out high street stores that cater for the larger lady, such as Evans or Ann Harvey. Also try department stores where you'll often find occasion wear in plus sizes at low prices.

Another suggestion would be to look through some mail order catalogues with her. You'll find most have suitable outfits, which she can try on at home. The option of paying by instalments may also make her less rigid when it comes to sticking to a budget.

You mother in law is probably feeling a little intimidated and worried about how much you are expecting her to spend on her outfit. See how she gets on in the regular high street shops first of all before you encourage her to try the slightly more upmarket boutiques. She may find something she likes and you could always treat her to a pretty scarf or elegant bag to complement the look and add just the right amount of finesse to her outfit without causing offence.
