Emma's answers to Why a white wedding dress?
Question
I'm quite a superstitious person and was wondering if there was any reason why the wedding dress was always white.
Answer
A new wedding dress represents good fortune and success in the bride's new life. There was a time when the bride would wear her favourite dress to the ceremony - and it wasn't necessarily white at all.
In 1840, Queen Victoria wore an elegant white gown to her wedding. She started a fashion trend which quickly caught on and continues to this day. White was also considered to represent affluence, virginity and purity.
