Emma's answers to Grandparents upset
Question
We want to get married in a private chapel near to my grandparents home. To be able to do this my grandfather had to write a letter to the 'benchers' asking for permission. My grandmpther phoned me after that and gave me details of places where my fiancé and his father can hire morning suits. The problem is that my fiance doesn't want to wear one. He would rather buy a more contemporary suit - we're not having a trypically traditional wedding, so I agree that morning dress wouldn't really be appropriate. Unfortunately, this has upset my grandparents who have said that if we don't wear morning dress, they will cancel the letter and we won't be able to get married in the chapel. There isn't another church nearby.
Answer
Maybe your compromise could be for your fiance to hire a more contemporary morning suit - perhaps something like a frock coat with a velvet jacket?
Alternatively, could he wear a traditional morning suit for the ceremony to keep your family happy, and then change for the informal drinks afterwards?
If you're not happy with either of these options, I think you really have to explain your wishes to your grandparents, and that it is your special day and you would like their support. If they are determined not to compromise, perhaps you should consider looking for another venue.
