Emma's answers to Consent to marry

Question

I'm 16. My fiancé and I want to get married but are not sure about consent. My parents are divorced. I live with my mum and see my dad every other weekend. Do we need and both parents' permission to get married?

Answer

Throughout the United Kingdom, the minimum legal age for getting married is 16 years.

In England, Wales, Northern Ireland but not Scotland, you need the written consent of both your parents, or legal guardians if you are under 18 years of age. Where written consent is required, it will normally have to be given on a consent form provided by the registrar.

You should contact the registrar of the registration district in which you plan to marry for further information and to obtain the required forms.
