Emma's answers to Calling of the banns
Question
Is it compulsory to be present at each calling of our banns?
Answer
The banns are published by being read aloud during the service on three consecutive Sundays preceding the ceremony and the congregation is invited to register objections, if they have any.
It is usual for the couple to be in attendance on at least one of the three occasions when the banns are published but this isn't compulsory. I would suggest however that you do try and attend if you can. One reason for this is that if you're not there you won't know that they have definitely been read and if they aren't read on three successive Sundays then your wedding won't be able to go ahead. It's worth perhaps asking your mum or your fiancée's mum if they wouldn't mind going along if you can't make it yourself. It's better to be safe than sorry!
