Emma's answers to Where do we give notice?
Question
Both myself and my boyfriend have recently moved abroad. However, we intend to return to the UK in the near future to marry. I understand that we have to give notice to the registrar in our home district. What defines our home district? Is it the area where we lived before moving abroad? Can we use the district where we grew up and our parents still live? We want to marry asap but unfortunately do not have much time available for extended trips to the UK. We are therefore looking for an option that does not involve us spending seven days in the UK before giving notice.
Answer
If you don't live here, you can give notice anywhere, provided you fulfil the residency requirements for that area. The residency requirements are seven days and the notice period is fifteen days so I'm afraid you have to be in the country for 22 days before a civil wedding.
