Emma's answers to Having a 'Best Woman'

Question

I am getting married next February. We are planning an informal, civil wedding. I am not having any bridesmaids/maid of honour, however is there such a thing as "a best woman?" If so, what can you tell me. I have a special female friend in mind to ask to be my best woman. She introduced me to my fiance! But I don't want to ask her until I find out if there is such a thing. Thank you for any help.

Answer

'Best woman' is a very modern term, now used to describe the female counterpart to the best man. A best woman would normally be appointed in place of any bridesmaids, to assist the bride, though there's nothing to stop you having a best woman alongside your bridesmaids if you so wish. A best woman is often dressed differently to a bridesmaid, in a smart suit like a best man, though again there are no hard and fast rules.
