Louise and Alan Real Engagement Story

Written by    Last updated: August 16, 2006

I was working in a theatre on the south coast and the Technical Department were recruiting a new member of staff. I was very intrigued to find out who this new person was, as his predecessor was a bit of a woman’s man. I stole glances of the interviewees whenever I could, but didn’t see much, and when the big day came for him to start work, I was really excited.
When he (Alan) was introduced to me on that first day and we shook hands, I went weak at the knees – it was love at first sight. He was tall, dark, and handsome – strangely not the sort of guy I normally went for. We got it together a few weeks later, but it didn’t work out as I had a long term boyfriend of 6 years and Alan didn’t want to complicate matters if I was not going to leave him. He started seeing someone else, who worked in the restaurant next to the theatre and I became very jealous.
One evening at work, I saw him kiss her and when I was walking home, I called him and asked him to come to the train station. He did and we had a big argument. He walked away, and apparently hit a wall very hard on his way home. This carried on for 6 months and then they finished, although I didn’t know about this until a couple of months later.
Then one weekend I was sitting at home on my own and a thought came into my head. What if I phoned Alan up and asked him to go for a drink? The worst he can say is “no”. So I did. And he said yes. After that, we met up for more drinks and started seeing more of each other, and getting to know each other better. We got on really well, and I was still very attracted to him.
Alan then handed in his resignation at the theatre as he had been offered a job in London and asked again if I was going to stay with my boyfriend or start seeing him. It didn’t take me long to make a decision and we have been together ever since.
We met in November 1998 and started seeing each other properly in November 1999. In February 2000, I moved up to London. In April, we went back to the town that we met to see some friends and that is when Alan proposed. I was very happy that day and we were in our hotel room when it happened. We had discussed marriage before, and we knew it was something we both wanted.
I was attempting to ask him, but couldn’t pluck up the courage. He knew what I was trying to say and popped the question for me!! The next day Alan’s mum phoned him on his mobile and asked if everything was all right. “Is there anything you want to tell me?” she asked. How spooky!!
We are now very happy – we have bought a house and have 2 cats. Our wedding date is set for August bank holiday 2001. This is forever.
