Kate & James’s True London City Wedding by Douglas Fry Photography

Written by    Last updated: December 24, 2012

When Kate and James both went to King’s College, they used to eat lunch in the Inner Temple garden – there was no question they would have a true London wedding at a venue that meant so much to them. The bridal party went for an ‘after party’ at Paramount Bar with panoramic views over the city – it was the perfect way to end their wedding day – with their closest friends, looking over the city they love most in the world. They asked Douglas Fry to record their very special day in his beautiful photographs.

Wedding date: 22nd October 2011

Wedding ceremony: The Chapel, King’s College London

Wedding reception: The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, London

Wedding photographer: Douglas Fry Wedding Photography

Wedding theme/colours: We didn’t really have a theme. We briefed everyone who we worked with, especially Inner Temple, that we wanted it to feel like it was a cross between a big family dinner – for everyone to feel incredibly relaxed the whole time – and Alice in Wonderland – with a giant chess set, candy floss stall, cheese and sweet tables and our friends singing opera during the church service – by the end of the evening, they were also singing around the piano at the reception!

We didn’t really have a colour scheme as such. We had ivory and black as the base – for the invites, menu cards and order of services – the flowers were briefed to be “neat, simple, but with a hint of hedgerow!” (We had wellington boots as a floral table centre – because we wear wellies most weekends…) We wanted the day to reflect the time of year, so in our main floral table centres we had crab apples nestled amongst the flowers and candles, and our signature cocktail was warm winter Pimms.

I choose black cocktail dresses for my bridesmaids and my shoes and ribbon around my dress because we were in central London – to me it was totally the right choice for where we were and the understated look we wanted for the day. Our wedding cars were normal black taxis – they didn’t even realise they were picking up a wedding party; the drivers all rushed out and polished the cars before we all got in to go to the church!  The groomsmen all wore whatever waistcoat and tie they wanted, the only stipulation was the pinstripe and black morning coat and trousers – as a fun groomsmen gift James bought them all different coloured socks to wear on the day.
