If you’re planning to make a chief bridesmaid’s speech at the wedding, here’s some advice on planning your material

Traditionally the wedding speeches were left to the men, but these days bridesmaids are stepping up to say a few words as well. Here are some ideas on how to honour the bride and groom.

Covering the basics

Obviously the formality of your speech depends on the formality of the occasion, but if you are the bride’s sister, or your relationship with her as a very old friend is well known, then you can get away with poking a bit more fun at her. However you approach it, make sure you cover the following in your speech:

  • Compliment the bride, and thank her for choosing you as her chief bridesmaid.
  • Comment on the preparations for the wedding: this is the time you have spent together, both in the run-up to the day and the time directly before the ceremony.
  • Share a memory of the bride that highlights an amusing or endearing part of her personality.
  • Compliment the ushers on behalf of the bridesmaids.
  • Toast the bride and groom.
