Alternative Wedding Dresses

Are you really a strapless ivory gown girl or is a colourful 1950s tea-length dress more your style? You don’t have to wear a long white wedding dress at all, the sky’s the limit.

A word of caution – your wedding pics are going to be around for a long, long, time. You want a style that fits, flatters, and makes you feel like the star you are. These days, the options are endless. A civil ceremony offers you as much choice as you like – think of Bianca Jagger in an uber glam trouser suit with outsize hat, or get those lovely legs out on a sweet, short style.

Even a church ceremony can be an opportunity to display your personal style – look to the catwalks of Paris, Milan, New York  and London for inspiration, but do check with your vicar or priest whether there are rules about covering up – you may need to cover your shoulders for the ceremony for example, and there are lots of pretty shrugs and scarves around this season that can give you various looks throughout the day.

This season, it’s all about lace, ruffles, pleating and layering, and there are plenty of options. From designer to high street, there’s a style to suit you so take your time, a deep breath, and make some appointments to try on a variety of styles before you make your final decision.

While white may be traditional, it’s no longer the only choice. This season, turquoise, pale pastels, nudes and even black are being seen as desirable wedding options, with even the doyenne of the bridal catwalk, Vera Wang, showing a black dress in her collection. Opting for colour gives you even more choice and means you can theme your whole day around your favourite shade.

And if you thought a show-stopping coloured dress was out of your budget then we’ve got the answer for you. Check out the brilliant BHS Bridal’s sumptuous new pastel coloured gowns. Hidden away in their bridesmaid’s collection, but perfect for an elegant alternative wedding dress with a high street price tag and a designer look!

Take your inspiration from eveningwear for a dress that will be an investment buy. Choosing a gown that can be worn again makes sense these days, and high street stores like Coast, Monsoon, and Debenhams have fabulous eveningwear departments with showstopper dresses that are perfect for the big day. Cocktail dresses are fabulous for summer or winter and give you more choice and the opportunity to move away from the traditional bridal dress.

Shopping is easier than ever before too. Look for gorgeous wedding dresses and lots more advice in the Dress Search or Net-a-Porter have recently launched a bridal section on their site, so if designer is the only way to go and trad bridal frocks aren’t your thing, then log on and look at alternatives there. Sites like ASOS and Fashionair let you search by style, colour and theme and again offer good alternatives if you want a dress you can wear again or something a little different.
