Wedding Dresses with Plunging Necklines and Low Backs

Traditionally, bridal gowns were designed with modesty in mind, as most brides were married in church; however with the increasing number of civil ceremonies and the influence of celebrities and designer fashion, bridal wear is becoming slinkier and sexier!

The red carpet has had a significant impact on current bridal wear trends as we see more wedding dresses sporting risqué plunging necklines and elegant low backs. Whilst we agree with ‘If you’ve got it; flaunt it’, there is a fine line between sophisticated and sexy and looking like you’re on the pull! Probably not the look to go for, on the day you are committing to one person for the rest of your life!

We take a look at how to wear wedding dresses with plunging necklines and low backs, to ensure that everyone remembers your dress for all the right reasons…

Pulling Off a Plunging Neckline

Some may disagree that a plunging neckline is appropriate for a bride to wear on her wedding day, however we believe, if done in a subtle way, this look can be tasteful and elegant. The key is not to expose too much boob. As you can see from the images above, whilst the neckline is low, a limited amount of the breast is actually on show.

We love the lace that trims the neckline on the Elie Saab gown (above, bottom left), which gives the illusion that it is more plunging that it actually is and adds a delicate and feminine edge.

If you love wedding dresses with plunging necklines but feel it’s a bit much for the ceremony, a lace illusion jacket could be worn to cover up and then removed later in the evening to create a ‘party look’.

Adding Sexy Sophistication with a Low Back

Your back will face your guests for the majority of the ceremony, so give them something gorgeous to look at! Even if the design of it is simple, wedding dresses with a low back really do create a wow factor silhouette. If you want to feel sexy but don’t want cleavage, this is a sophisticated and subtle way of achieving the look.

If a completely open back is still too exposed for you, a sheer veil will offer just enough coverage without taking away from the detail. A jacket or bolero could also be worn and then removed at the reception to reveal the detailing, giving you two different looks for the price of one!

Alternatively, dresses with illusion lace, as seen on the Pronovias dress below, will psychologically make you feel more covered up whilst still showing off a plunging neckline or back silhouette.

The Right Lingerie for your Dress

As much as a plunging neckline and open back is beautiful, you can’t just wear any old underwear! If you are happy to go bra-free, this is the best option, but don’t forget some boob tape to avoid exposing more than you wish! If you feel you need some support or padding, these bras from David’s Bridal are excellent options. With adhesive wings, plunging centres and adjustable straps, you are sure to find the right bra for your gown!
