Could You Share the Limelight on Your Big Day?
The Queen celebrated her Diamond Jubilee in 2012 with a huge extravaganza of a party, but how would you feel if her soiree was on the same weekend as your wedding? Three brides tell Ali Beaven of Prezola.com how they feel.
I remember my friend’s 13th birthday vividly, because she’d arranged an amazing party with dozens of friends, Cherryade and a mobile disco in her back garden. The whole affair was planned to perfection, but she’d overlooked one key fact – Live Aid, the world’s biggest ever pop concert, was airing that day. She ended up sulking in her bedroom while we all mooned over Spandau Ballet on TV for the whole evening.
Next month will see the UK’s biggest street party for a decade as we celebrate The Queen’s diamond jubilee. But what if you’re planning on getting married that weekend? Will there be brides sulking in bedrooms all over the country as Maj gets all of the attention? Will you end up walking to the church because the streets are clogged with drunken revellers? Or would you embrace the whole affair in a red dress with royal blue bridesmaids and a groom in white?
I asked some of our Jubilee brides about their plans:
Soraya and James booked their June 2nd wedding well over a year ago. “We hadn’t realised at the time that this was the Jubilee weekend, but I think it’ll be great actually. We’re not going with the theme on the day, but I have chosen Union Jack china from Emma Bridgewater, which I absolutely love! So we’re kind of entering into the spirit of things.”
Hannah and Nick tie the knot in London on June 4th and have completely embraced the Jubilee. “It seemed like such a great opportunity to have a proper street party themed reception that we couldn’t resist. We’re having red, white and blue table arrangements, Union Jack bunting and an MC in a traditional red coat that will be raising a toast to the Queen. I can assure you there will be no sulking from me that day!”
Matt and Emily have taken the extra bank holidays to fly 32 guests to Provence for their wedding. “Yes, there’s bound to be some red, white and blue, but of the French variety I’m afraid. For us the real downside was that flights were just so expensive that weekend.”
Whatever way you look at it, 2012 is an amazing year in the UK and a great time to be getting married. If I was doing it all again I’d commemorate my year with some Great British keepsakes and items that celebrate our Britishness, like the Jan Constantine range pictured above.
