Honeymoons With a Twist
Don’t fancy the idea of lazing on a beach or following the herd? Who can blame you? Your honeymoon is more than a holiday, it’s the most important trip of your entire life. Whet your appetite with Confetti’s guide to honeymoons with a difference!
Take to the open roads
If you’ve always dreamed of hitting the road like in the movies, pick up a map and plan your route. The USA is perhaps the best place to take this kind of honeymoon – the roads are good and the exploring endless. Bear in mind that you’ll probably want some time to relax, so take lots of breaks and spend several nights in each of your destinations.
Go on a honeymoon cruise
If luxury on board a cruise ship sounds like bliss, head off on the open seas. Whether you voyage down the Nile or head across the Atlantic on the QM2, make sure you choose a cruise that’s heading for an area you would like to visit. Look for a cruise that offers activities that appeal to you, whether that’s a casino and nightclub on board, to yoga classes and a luxury spa.
Beach with a difference
If you want to enjoy a few days on the beach, but want a bit of variation, head to Brazil, Morocco or South Africa. Brazil has an endless coastline coupled with the buzz of cities like Rio de Janeiro, the samba beat of Salvador de Bahia and the wilds of the Amazon rainforest. In Morocco you can travel between the large seaside resorts of the coast and the shopping paradise of Marrakech, or head into the Atlas mountains for a trek. South Africa has stunning beaches, excellent game parks and exciting cities.
Gourmet experience
If you love wine and fine cuisine, make the most of it on your honeymoon. Wine connoisseurs might want a week in the Champagne region of France, or you could combine a food and wine holiday in Tuscany, the South of France, South Africa or Australia. Fans of spicy cuisine should head to Vietnam, India or Sri Lanka. Don’t forget that you’ll want to enjoy romantic dinners together on your honeymoon, so do consider the cuisine before you book. If you’re not a fan of spicy food, for example, avoid south Asia, while if you enjoy seafood, you might decide to head to the Caribbean.
Special interest
Use your honeymoon to enjoy a special interest that you both enjoy. If you both love movies, for example, you could plan a trip to the Cannes Film Festival, or a honeymoon in Los Angeles. If you’re both fans of yoga, you might use your honeymoon to visit a relaxing yoga retreat, while keen cyclists could plan an exploration on their bikes. Or you could both learn a new skill, like scuba diving in the Maldives.
Romantic honeymoons close to home
What could be more unique than not going abroad on your honeymoon? Instead of spending money on flying half way around the world, enjoy total luxury in the UK. Head to a Scottish castle for a week or two of four-poster beds and roaring log fires, or relax in an idyllic Cornish cottage.
Adrenaline rush
If you like a little excitement, opt for a more active honeymoon. This could involve scuba diving, white water rafting, snowmobiling, bungee jumping, skydiving or rock climbing. You could have a cosy skiing honeymoon, or go kayaking in the South Seas. The key to the success of this kind of honeymoon is choosing an activity that you both enjoy to the same extent.
Go wild
Getting up close to animals in the wild can be one of the most exhilarating experiences you can have. South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania are best for seeing the classic Big Five (elephant, rhino, leopard, lion and buffalo), while Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Australia offer smaller exotic animals in tropical environments. Consider combining your safari with a few days of relaxation – safaris can be tiring, particularly if you’re up at the crack of dawn every morning, so think about including a few days on a beach afterwards.
Keep it simple
Not everyone wants to stay in a five-star hotel on their honeymoon. Why not pack your rucksack, passports and a few maps and go backpacking? The world is your oyster and, if you keep your travel details fairly flexible, you can go wherever you want for as long as you like. You can also spend the money you save on accommodation on travelling that little bit further – some couples even choose to go on a budget round-the-world adventure.
