Expensive glasses are meant to enhance your enjoyment of the drink placed in them. No need to hide them away in the loft or garage for only ‘special occasions’. Enjoy them on a regular basis by following these top tips:
1. When doing the wash‐up, deal with glasses first.
2. Expensive glassware should not be put in a dishwasher. Hand painted glass, in particular, should only be washed by hand.
3. To retain the lustre and brilliance of crystal glassware, wash each piece separately in warm water with washing‐up liquid. Rinse in clean water, drain on kitchen paper or a tea towel and dry with a soft clean cloth.
4. Store glasses in a closed cupboard, standing the right way up as storing them rim down may chip the edges.
5. Badly stained cut glass can be left overnight in a mixture of water, detergent and a few drops of ammonia. Gently remove stains with a soft toothbrush.
6. To remove a stopper that is stuck in a decanter, apply a mixture of two parts white spirit, one part glycerine and one part salt between the neck and stopper. After 24 hours, wrap a hot cloth round the neck and ease out the stopper.
7. Separate ordinary table glasses that are stuck together by filling the top one with cold water and then dip the bottom one in warm water.
