Your wedding day is quite possibly the biggest and most important event that you’ll ever arrange, and so naturally there’s a lot of pressure to get everything just perfect. Some brides even admit to scrapbooking their ideal wedding from childhood!

But for many couples, the honeymoon afterwards is almost as essential. After all, doesn’t it make sense that the best day of your life should be followed by the best holiday of your life?

Getting the Timing Right

Modern weddings can cost many thousands to organise, and so not every couple can afford to take a big honeymoon straightaway afterwards. Work commitments can also be a factor in delaying the honeymoon for a few months.

One option is to take what’s called a ‘mini-moon’ of just a few days first, perhaps a long weekend, then save the real thing for later. This is also a really good idea if you want to take advantage of lower hotel and flight rates at a different time of year, or if you want to honeymoon in a particular place but your wedding date falls at a time when it’s not suitable to visit.

The amount of time you have available for your honeymoon is also crucial when choosing a destination. If you only have a week to spare, then is it really worth going somewhere far afield like Australia, when you are going to have to spend pretty much two days of your holiday in the airport and on the plane, plus have to deal with jetlag?

Budgeting For Your Honeymoon

Putting together a sensible budget before your wedding and sticking to it can help keep costs down and prevent your imagination from running away with you! Many couples will include all or at least some of their honeymoon costs in their overall wedding budget, in the knowledge that if they make a little saving here or there on other arrangements, it will give them a bit more money for the trip.

It’s quite common nowadays for couples to ask their wedding guests to contribute toward their honeymoon in lieu of a gift. Don’t be shy about this if it’s something you’d like to do, as it’s very unlikely to cause offence if you ask for a bit of cash instead. Remember that many people do struggle with wedding gift ideas, and so if you make it easier for them in this respect, they might even be quite relieved.

Choosing a Destination

For many couples, the most tricky part of arranging a honeymoon is actually deciding on where to go. One of you wants the beach, the other prefers the mountains. One likes the idea of a remote barefoot luxury escape, the other is more inclined towards lavish five star hotels.

Here at Tinggly, we bring together the best experiences all over the world – romantic, cultural, pampering and adrenaline-based. So we think that a good way to settle on a honeymoon destination is actually to work out what kind of an experience you want to have while you’re away. That’s because many destinations will offer something for different interests. Barcelona, for example, has a cool beach, great nightlife and food, but also plenty of amazing cultural attractions. Thailand has some seriously enticing spa retreats, paradise beaches, and magnificent ancient temples and palaces to explore, but also action-packed activities like whitewater rafting and scuba diving.

Think about whether you’re the type of couple who enjoys staying in one place for a couple of weeks, or if you want the freedom to travel around a little and see different parts of a country.

Make It Count

Our last recommendation is not to fall into the trap of thinking you need to go the ultra-glamorous route, or cut out things you’ve always wanted to do just because you need to stretch your budget. Weddings can sometimes be stressful to organise, and you deserve a fantastic reward afterwards. Make sure your honeymoon is the ultimate holiday by tailoring it perfectly to your interests.
