A Rustic Italian Engagement Party

The idea: What’s more suitable for an engagement party than a romantic, rustic style dinner party with a sprinkle of Italian charm. Invite your closests friends and family round and if the weather permits, eat al fresco and get the BBQ out.

Styling: Burlap table clothes, wild flowers in glass jars, wooden cutlery and pretty printed straws. Serve food on chunky wooden boards and in hand painted terracotta bowls. If you’re outside, string fairy lights in the trees and dot candles along the table as the sun sets.

Food and Drink: Begin you meal with a classic Italian antipasto which should include salami’s and prosciutto, cheese and  olives. Follow with grilled meats and seafood, tomato and mozzarella salad and fresh bread. Wash down with a crisp white Italian wine and Sicilian lemonade. An Italian feast wouldn’t be complete with homemade gelato!

A Retro Birthday Party

The Idea: A fun and vibrant party based around the 50’s and 60’s retro theme. A party that will be enjoyed by all ages!

Styling: Bright colours, polka dots and stripes, novelty props, a candy bar and of course a photo booth!

Food and Drink: Serve classic American diner food such as hotdogs, burgers and fries. Fill tube full of ice and bottles of your favourite soda pop. Create a candy bar with bowls or retro sweets and bags of popcorn.

A New Year White Party

The Idea: Inspired by Rio de Janeiro’s legendary new year white party!

Styling: Think glam and white everywhere, from the decor to your party outfit and your guests! A white marquee is the perfect back drop for this sophisticated event. Cover the place in all that twinkles including fairy lights, table gems, confetti and candles to give your venue you an extra special magical feeling at midnight.

Food and Drink: You could either keep it simple with canapés and cocktails or offer a sophisticated three course meal. One thing’s for sure, the champagne has got to be flowing!

A Wanderlust Leaving Party

The Idea: What better way to celebrate moving abroad or travelling than with a wanderlust themed party?!

Decoration: All things travel related of course! We are loving the idea of making paper airplanes which people can write their fare well wishes on and compasses as little gifts for your guests.

Food and Drink: Use the country you are moving or travelling to inspire the food and drink you serve. Moving to America? Offer American classics such as mac and cheese, burgers and fries. Travelling the world for a year? Put on a spread of dishes from all over – spring rolls from Thailand, curry from India, sushi from Japan.

A Gatsby Style Anniversary Party

The Idea: If there was one era that really knew how to party, it was the roaring 20’s! Remember that party scene from The Great Gatsby film?? Let’s re-create that!

Decoration: Set the vibe with a jazz band. Host in a vintage style bar or transform your own home using art deco as inspiration. Get the girls to dress as flappers and guys in a tux!

      Hello Daisy 🙂 Hollywood is a great theme, and very glam! I’m thinking – Oscars, so gowns for the ladies, suits for the guys. You could do a trivia on previous Oscars winners, and hang little cut-outs of the statuette for decorations. Or, you could do a costume party of famous actors (Greta Garbo, Charlie Chaplin?). Definitely roll out the red carpet! You could also decorate with palm trees and martinis – how very Los Angeles! 🙂 hope this helps you – good luck!

      Hi maayan, well having a tomboy shouldn’t be a problem! 🙂 I assume you mean – this person is not into girly stuff? There are still lots of things you can do. One thing is to do a “music video” party, where you get one person, hopefully an adult, to record a music video on their digital camera or camcorder, and all your guests will dress up and be in your video – you pick your favourite song (or two!) and pretend you are a band, or a group of dancers etc. You can also do a scavenger hunt around your house – hide little gifts, as many as you have guests, all around your place, and whoever finds something they can keep it. You can also go out for some bowling or paintball, or any other activity that’s available in your area 🙂 good luck!

      Hmmm… one way to do a party is not necessarily a theme, but more of a direction, like – sailing party? Decor would be mostly in blue, and guests would come dressed as if for a cruise. Everyone has something blue/white in their wardrobe. You could decorate in white and blue as well. You could do a theme in one colour, any other colour you like. You could do an Ascot theme, where everyone has to be dressed like for the races. You could also do a “hats” theme, where eveyone comes in a hat, the napkins are folded like hats, etc. For something funny you could do “come dressed in your worst clothes” party, where everyone will simply look awful just for a laugh 😀
      Personally I’m a huge fun of potluck parties – everyone brings food, this way the hostess only needs to provide the location and plates etc. This is really easy to do, and saves loads of money and time. Also you get to try food you normally wouldn’t! Just remember one thing, there is always too much food so loads of leftovers, keep some tupperware handy and give as much to guests to take home as you can! 😀

      What a good idea for a theme! 😀 you’d definitely need at least some people to come dressed as can-can dancers, not sure if everyone could afford this… in a nutshell, the ladies dress up in something very chic, and the gentlement either like Parisian men in berets, or high-class tuxedos, OR like Parisian waiters – white shirts and black pants, no tie? You’ll definitely need one of those French mixed CDs with old style songs, by the likes of Edith Piaf and Yves Montand and Maurice Chevalier. For food you would definintely need baguettes and cheese, first and foremost, and good French wine. For the rest of the food it’s easy – just serve anything you like, but put the names into Google translator and make little fake menus with all the food names written on them in French, like in a cafe. You could serve crepes and tartelettes of course, also souffle, which is hard to make (better to buy maybe?). You can decorate the room with posters of French movies, they are quite cheap on eBay. And of course you need to put an Eiffel Tower somewhere, either a replica like a toy, or a picture on the wall, or icing on the cake shaped like it, etc, in case anyone is in doubt where they are!       What a great idea for a party! 😀 sounds like super fun! I immediately thought what songs have anything to do with rain, so you could borrow the lyric? I’m personally a fan of that old classic by Milli Vanilli “Blame It On The Rain” (don’t tell anyone!) 😉 I found a super useful website that lists loads of songs to do with rain, maybe that will help?

      It is a new skincare beauty product. There will be Music Live Band performing , models do catwalk for their skincare products on that night too. The company combines their anniversary , appreciation night and product launching all together on that dinner. And he wants me to think of a theme for that night. My friend recommends me ‘oscar night’ as the boss want it to be a grand dinner but I don’t think ‘oscar night’ is suitable 🙁 awww…

      Thanks for the info, that helps! 😀 Ok I thought of a few ideas, let me know if any of them are suitable, or if you need any more:

      Starry Night – everything glittering basically, gems on tables, stars on the ceiling, a silver glitterball, guests dressed in white and lots of bling?
      Black and Gold – decor with these colours, and everyone comes dressed in black and gold – very Bond and a bit “oscar night” without being “oscar night”, you know what I mean?
      Face like Garbo – or Monroe, or Harlow, or whoever was old Hollywood glam beauty queen that’s most recognisable? You’d need a lot of black/white photos of old Hollywood stars to decorate the room, of course including the star you choose. Old Hollywood is always considered very glamorous.
      Beauty and the Beat – this is for the product AND the band
      Beauty in Bloom – you’d need a lot of flowers to decorate this party, you know how in skincare commercials they sometimes use rose petals? Make theme red and pink and ivory.
      Ballroom Glam – you could hire some ballroom dancers to come in their formal attire and dance around the room or do an exhibition for the guests, to provide that unusual wow? Ballroom outfits are super glam always!

      It’ll be pretty hard to have a party no one has ever thought of before but you can try! 😀 I don’t know your budget or how much help you’re getting from various people, but maybe a circus theme would be fun? You can also think of your favourite TV show or singer/band, and do a theme with them. You can ask people to dress up in costumes etc. If you are really stuck, you can look for some more unusual ideas online. Best of luck! 😀

      Andrea, this is a marvellous idea! Simple but so much fun potential!

      You could also do stuff like:

      – everyone has to wear something polkadot – decoration would be easy with this one!
      – everyone wear an item of clothing that belongs to their parents – I’m going to guess a lot of 60s/70s/80s will appear, so any decor will do, loads of balloons always look amazing!
      – country – get a lot of gingham!
      – fake mustaches – everyone wear a mustache, and you can decorate with cutouts of bowler hats etc? I saw fantastic mustache packs in my local pound store the other day, it was a whole pack of 6 different mustaches for just £1, they would be marvellous!

    Hey im having a 16th birthday party and I wanted it to be themed but one that everyone would join in and not find boring. I did a Hawaii party for my 14th and I want something bigger and better. My mum and her friends are giving me lots of suggestions but im not to sure on what to do because I want people to join in and really get into the theme.       One of the ways to get everyone involved is to hire someone to entertain the party – and it doesn’t have to be related to your theme. For example, you could hire a magician to teach magic tricks to the guests, or a caricature artist?

      A pirate theme, how fantastic! 😀 there are loads of things you can do for activities! For example: have a contest for best pirate costume. Have a treasure hunt with a map, and the winner finds a bottle of rum. Everyone has to talk like a pirate and those who don’t have to do chores as punishment. You could have pirate trivia. You can have pirate sword fights (with cardboard swords of course!). At a party like this, the adults will play like kids, it’ll be great! 🙂

      What a great idea! Well, the first thing you need to decide is whether you want to go Vegas or Monte Carlo – if people are dressing up, this will give them a better idea! For Monte Carlo think more James Bond, for Vegas – the Rat Pack, showgirls, Elvis etc.
      For games – you probably already have something set up for roulette or cards? In addition, you can do any games where people can bet on the outcome, for example – a windup toy race! You could have any number of board games that involve everyone, especially Seen It? You could give as a reward chips for your other games like roulette. In the end, you could count up how many chips everyone has, and the top 3 or 5 people get prizes.

      Hi Joy, thank you for your comment 🙂 are any of the themes we already suggested suitable? Most of them can be modified to fit kids as well – all you have to do is add some games.
      A Christmas party is not an easy suggestion, because everyone expects a Christmas theme, if you do something else do you think the kids will be disappointed?
      But if you really want to do something different then I suggest going the opposite way – do a beach party! That’s really easy for everyone – Hawaiian shirts (everyone has one), leis, beachballs for the kids, colourful drinks, and travel posters on the walls! It will be completely different than anyone expects! 🙂

      Hi Jina – thank you for your question! 🙂 glamour is easy for a prom night, as everyone will be dressed up anyway, so all you have to do is give everyone a general idea of the theme. Some best glamour party themes are: casino, Oscar night, also royalty, theatre or masquerade? You could tell your guests to only wear certain colours, for example black and white, or for all the girls to wear tiaras and long opera gloves. Hope this helps! 🙂

      Hi zana83 – luckily summer has a lot of options, not just tiki or luau! Things that make people think of summer are flowers, BBQs, holidays, etc. For flowers, you can do a 70s Flower Power party – easy to dress up for and super fun! You could do a “beach” theme, with BBQ, beachballs, blankets, and very colourful cocktails – guests to wear beach stuff, like shorts and t-shirts! For holidays, you could do a Mexican or Spanish twist – it reminds people of summer and going on holidays, so you’ll need the appropriate food and some palm tree decor. Hope this helps – summer is a great theme! 🙂

      Hi Pia, thank you for your question 🙂 the easiest idea is to do a trivia party. Get different levels of trivia games – from very easy ones to Trivial Pursuit (which can be hard), also games related to TV, movies, and pop culture etc. Divide people into teams of tables or groups, and have a good oldfashioned challenge. Serve finger foods and fun drinks. Everyone will be talking and laughing, getting to know each other, and having loads of fun! Plus you’ll find out who the smartest people are 😉 hope you have a super party!

      Hello Shanne, thank you for your message 🙂 there are lots of options for a girly party! First, think of some of the things your girlfriends like best – is it jewellery? makeup? fashion? Hello Kitty? Justin Bieber? Then make your theme around that. For example – you could visit your local pound shop and buy some jewellery, then drape it around the drinks glasses for decoration. You could decorate the table in your favourite colours, like pink, blue, yellow, whatever you prefer? For food, the easiest and most colourful option is finger foods – little sandwiches and everything in miniature, plus lots of colourful candy, like M&Ms or Skittles. For drinks, you can serve anything that’s colourful OR you can buy some very cool colourful plastic glasses – every drink looks good in one of those!

      That’s a lovely thought, but without knowing more about what your Dad likes, it’s hard to suggest something. First you should look into all things Scottish, see if you can get some inspiration from that? I think a great option for a large 50th party is a bonfire or a BBQ, people love roasting stuff over a fire (sausages on sticks and marshmallows!). Hope this helps a bit, and have a great party! 🙂

      Hi Kat, thank you for your message. Have you looked at the themes and ideas I already mentioned, to see if anything suits? Of course, with theatre, the first thing that comes to mind is a costume party, with a specific theme, for example James Bond, all men come as Bond, all women come as Bond girls? This is just an example, you can do any kind of famous celebrity that has a distinctive look. For a simpler option, you could simply focus on one colour, like a silver party, and decorate the room with movie and theatre posters. If it’s one of those “get to know you” parties, then nothing works better than a trivia party, perhaps centered around the movie or theatre world. Hope this helps, and all the best for your party! 🙂

      Hi Verity, there are lots of things you can do for your party! Please check with your parents to make sure they are ok with your final choice, and here are some suggestions for you: a spa party, where you do all kinds of pampering, paint your nails, do your hair, etc; you can have a game party with games you can play indoors like golf; you can have a music party and hire a dancer to teach you some of the latest dance steps; crafts party where you make loads of stuff like jewellery etc; or a secret agent spy party where everyone wears glasses and does a scavenger hunt; or a baking party where you make all kinds of yum stuff and then decorate it – and then of course, eat it! 🙂

Since many of the people will be acquaintainces, it cannot be too zany either (vicars and tarts will not do 🙂

    The theme I thought of is Salsa Night, and having an instructor come in and give lessons, followed by a night of dancing. So my questions are:

    1. What kind of outfits/costumes will go with it?
    2. What kind of decorations should I go for?
    3. Should I even bother looking into additional games/entertainment?
    4. Lastly is “salsa night’ boring sounding? Should I think of a more jazzy name?
    Sorry, for all these questions. I just seem to have hit a wall and would love to get some input. Thanks!

      Hi MissM, thank you for your kind words! 🙂 a Salsa Party is a marvellous idea, I’m sure it’ll be a great success! To answer your questions:

      1. outfits/costumes – the MOST important thing you have to tell your guests is WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES! That goes for both the men and the ladies. Ladies should be in dresses, but it’s not a requirement. On the other hand, no woman looks feminine doing salsa in pants 😉
      2. decorations – I’d suggest something tropical – palm-tree pics or actual potted palm trees, umbrellas in drinks, lots of colour, balloon clusters, strings of lights, and of course some posters of dancers
      3. additional games/entertainment – I don’t think you need to look into any more, BUT if your budget allows you could get the salsa instructor to come with a partner and give a showdance?
      4. “salsa night” – I think it sounds amazing for a party night, I’d totally go to that! 😀 you can call it “sizzling salsa” or add a “fiesta” somewhere – but it’s great the way it is!

      And yes I will mention that guests should wear their most comfy dancing shoes… Ladies do turn cranky when their feet hurt (then again, maybe that is just me :))

      You are very welcome – and you are very right about the ladies and the shoes! 😉 even if they don’t get very grouchy, they won’t be able to dance if their feet hurt, and of course you want everyone to dance as much as they can! I was also thinking, maybe you could have a contest for the best couple, and they could win something dance-related that’s made of chocolate for example (to keep the expense down), these days you can find anything made of chocolate! 🙂 have a wonderful party!

      Hello Reks, thank you for your comment. I think maybe a Teddy Bear Picnic party may be a good idea? Every mommy will bring her baby and the baby’s bear (or soft toy), and you could have the picnic outside if the weather is nice, or inside if it rains. Spread a big blanket on the floor, with the mommies and their babies sitting around with the bears. Prepare some really tiny nibbles for food, for both the babies and the mummies, and you’ll have a great time! You could also think about hiring a babysitter for a day to mind at least some of the babies, so the mommies can have a break too 🙂 good luck!

      Have a look at all the party suggestions above and see which one sounds the most fun to you. You can have your friends pitch into any party by bringing food and decorations, or putting in a small amount of money each towards entertainment 🙂

    Your ideas are amazing, but unsure as to what would suit what I am planning. Could I have your opinion?
    I am planning a very small only (5 guests) dinner party for my mum as she likes to stay at home. It will be here and her daughters age ranging from 11-20years. Our mum doesnt like much girly things but loves food, movies, travel, sherlock holmes. We’d like to give her a fun day with things to do with us and tasty food. Any ideas?

      Well, I’ve had a little think about it, and considering you want a small dinner party without going out, it’s going to have to be all about cooking and entertainment 🙂 I found this website about Sherlock Holmes cook books – you could either buy the books as a gift for your Mum and/or cook from one of them for the party? The cooking would be part of the activities:

      For activities I suggest: hiring a musician to give a little concert right in your Mum’s living room, it’s a rare pleasure that hardly anyone ever thinks about, but I’ve been to a small party with a guitarist and it was marvellous! Also, as you’ll have kids, you could have a go at making your own one-of-a-kind candles. Look around charity shops for as many mismatched china cups and saucers as you can, then get sheets of beeswax and find instructions online, this way everyone will have some lovely mementos to take home after the party. Alternatively, you can do a baking party or a craft/knitting party – if nobody in your family knows how to bake or knit, you can have someone come over to do a little lesson and demonstration for a small fee. You can ask at your local knitting shop if they know anyone who’d be willing to do this.

      Thats sounds like a wonderful party! Have you looked at any of the themes I suggested so far, to see if they’re suitable? One thing you should definitely consider having is a slideshow of your pictures throughout the years, it works every time for a milestone birthday!

      Depending on the type of party you want to have – for example, a sit-down party, or more of a dancing party – you could do a high-class affair with everyone dressed up, hats, gloves, gents in suits etc. For a dance party, you could play all the hits from all the decades since you were born!

      My personal favourite is always a 30s theme party, very F. Scott Fitzgerald, it’s both elegant and relaxed, and everyone knows how to dance the Charleston! 🙂

      Hi Martha, thank you for your question 🙂 have you looked at the themes we have suggested so far, to see if anything suits? I don’t know how large your party will be, or whether you’re having only girls, or girls and boys?

      Some sophisticated themes you could try: a Venetian masquerade, or a general Italian theme (food would be easy for this, and you could hire a singing chef!), also Arabian Nights, or you could hire a DJ to teach everyone how to spin records? You could also try a dance party, and hire a dance instructor to teach everyone some cool steps in any style – salsa, street dance, hip hop, even flamenco? Also – if you’re having an all girl party – a makeup artist to teach you all how to wear makeup properly!

I’m attempting to plan out my 18th for later on this year and considering doing Arabian Nights or something along those lines… As it so happens, however I don’t own a desert in my backyard 😛 I don’t want to have it inside because my house is way too small and my backyard is terraced so I want to make good use of it! How would I go about decorating my backyard to suit the theme?

      Hello Emily, thank you for your comment! This is a great idea for a theme, and in case of a backyard you need to think carefully about the weather, in case you have to move the party indoors at short notice! So I would say – keep the decor to a fair minimum, and concentrate on the appropriate food to emphasize the party theme (arabic food of course!) 😉 however, for decor you can do the following – drapes in various strong colours, bringing in mind an exotic tent (you can get fabrics for this really cheap, from a fabric store). Lots of cushions scattered around for guests to sit on, plus a few key choice decorative pieces like bronze or copper bowls etc. Check some arabian tent pictures on Google to get an idea what I’m talking about.     I have to plan an awards dinner for the company I work for. The awards are for the journalists (photography and writing). Last year we did a “hollywood/oscars” type party. I’m thinking this year of doing “The Newsies” type part, but I’m unsure how to make this a fancy high class event without ruining the theme. Any ideas? I need some help…

      Hello Shoveon, thank you for your message! I have to admit, I’m not sure how to make The Newsies into a high class theme for your event! I doubt anyone would want to dress up like the characters from the film…
      I feel the only option is – make it a theme, but without expecting the guests to participate – so you could have posters of the movie on the walls, perhaps a screening of the movie in the background, and as it is a musical – could you afford to hire someone to re-create any of the dance scenes from the movie? You could have the menus or place cards printed in the style of old newspapers, or you could also have a quiz on general newspaper and media knowledge.

Our school has a Big Brag-night where we introduce our sports teams to the rest of the school and we get pumped up for the biggeste spoertsday of the year. All the teams who participate in this has to pick a theme to dress up in and a song on which they enter the hall. Our team does not want to do the whole short-skirt-cliche and we are thinking about Pilots and footballplayers. pleeeaassse help me with some more themes to choose from???? Budget is sadly non existent so we have to pay for everything ourselves. Please help me.

      Hi MissDoLittle, thanks for your message! I like your party idea, but I can see how you may have some limitations with the budget. You really need to think about something that almost everyone would have in their closet…
      Here are several ideas on what you can do:
      80s aerobic instructor – everyone wears brightly coloured headbands, bright leotards with wide-neck t-shirts over them (like in Flashdance!), and legwarmers
      Crazy sports fan – everyone wears some sporty gears and gets their face painted in their chosen team colours
      Ballerinas – it will be really funny for all the boys to be in tutus, they can wear t-shirts with them too, and tutus are really cheap to make, as you can buy very inexpensive tulle in any fabric shop
      Ancient Romans – all you need is a white sheet and a wreath for the head
      Tennis stars – everyone in tennis outfits and with rackets
      Pilots – I love this idea too!
