Roles & Duties

Wedding Roles

What does your role mean in a wedding? Advice on wedding roles for all the bridal party roles ‐ bride, groom, father and mother of the bride, best man, bridesmaids, ushers and guests.

Your bridal party are the most important people at your wedding (apart from the bride and groom!) They will hopefully support you during the planning process and make sure everything runs smoothly on the big day, so it’s important to choose people you can trust and that they know exactly what’s expected of them.

The main attendants for the bride and groom are the chief bridesmaid (sometimes called the matron of honour or maid of honour) and the best man. They will be your left hand man or woman throughout your engagement and on your wedding day, as well as organising your hen and stag nights. The best man is expected to give a speech at the reception, and increasingly the chief bridesmaid is opting to say a few words too. Find inspirational sample speeches and pointers to make sure the speeches are memorable for the right reasons. We also have a full list of duties for each role and tips on making sure you’ve chosen the right person for the job.

Helping out the chief bridesmaid and best man will be the bridesmaids and ushers. Just in case you’re not sure exactly what an usher does, we’ve put together a guide to what’s expected of them to make sure everyone knows what their responsibilities are. The bridesmaids are for more than just looking pretty in the photographs, they will help the bride to get ready on the morning of the wedding, and accompany her on dress shopping trips. In ancient times the bridesmaids were used to ward off evil spirits who tried to kidnap the bride by providing a decoy; however her role is much more of a supportive one nowadays!

The family of the bride and groom are also very important members of the bridal party. Modern wedding etiquette can be a nightmare, but luckily Confetti have put together a useful guide for the parents of the bride and groom including who pays for what, tips for making a speech and inspirational ideas on what to wear. We also have advice for stepfathers, and tips on being a guest at a wedding ceremony.

Find information and advice on everything from duties and responsibilities, to outfits and finances in Confetti’s ultimate guide to wedding roles, and make sure nobody puts a foot wrong!
