When it comes to choosing a wedding cake, most of us are thinking in terms of fruit or sponge, two tiers or three. If you want your wedding to stand out then an alternative wedding cake could be just the place to start. Cake pops are a cute cross between a cake and a lollipop – a delightfully delicious trend in alternative wedding cakes.
Wedding cake styles
There are all sorts of wedding cake options these days. From traditional multi-tiered fruit cakes on stands held up by pillars to crazy new-age looking ‘inside out cakes’ where the inside of the coloured shaped sponge is as decorative as the icing on the outside. Eclectic cakes have a different flavour to each tier and are very popular with couples who don’t care for fruit cake but know their family do.
Cheese wedding cakes are another new trend and not the sweet fruit-laden cheesecake you’d expect, but barrels of different speciality hard cheeses piled on top of the next and arranged in the shape of a wedding cake – perfect for rustic country weddings.
Cupcakes have been hugely popular too, with a selection of tiny sparkly decorated cupcakes a pretty addition to the main wedding cake, often presented on lower stands to the single tiered cake at the top.

Wedding cake pops
And now cake pops are proving to be a wedding craze set to last. Cake pops are popular because they are as cute as they are easy to hold (each having their own stick just like a lollipop). They’re small so guests won’t think twice about taking a bite and the best part is you can have them decorated just as you would like!
Iced in your chosen wedding colours or to your overall wedding theme, cake pops provide an unusual talking point and a splash of colour and interest to your wedding reception. Have a traditional multi-tier wedding cake for the adults and a selection of cake pops just for the children or have a selection of cake pops for everyone as well as the traditional wedding cake. You can also have cake pops as favours, or arranged in a bowl or vase as centrepieces!

Presenting your cake pops
There are different ways of presenting your cake pops depending on how you intend to use them at your wedding. As an additional or alternative option to a slice of wedding cake, present a number of cake pops with their sticks pushed firmly into a decorative base such as a coloured half-globe stand (provided by your cake maker) or you could have them decorating the main wedding cake, or arranged around it on the same table.

Cake pop favours
Cake pops make ideal wedding favours and can be wrapped so guests can easily take them home. You could even add each guest’s name to them and use them as place cards. Add a coloured ribbon and a personal message to make them extra special.
Design your own cake pops
While making your own cake pops is not impossible, it’s much easier to design your own and ask a local specialist cake maker to create them for you. Ask if you could have a hand in designing the little round cakes on sticks to your chosen wedding colours or theme. Alternatively, you could make the cake pops yourself, for a fun and unique DIY project!

Style examples
A navy blue and white wedding could have iced white cake pops with navy ribbons tied around them.

A blush pink and sage green summer wedding with a butterfly theme could have a combination of blush pink and sage green cake pops tied with alternating colour ribbons, plus a tiny edible rice paper butterfly as an extra touch!
For something more eye-catching still, make the round cake pops into little people and have the whole bridal party dressed in tiny clothes made of icing for a real wow-factor!
