The basics of your table decorations are the linen, china, cutlery and glassware. If your venue can provide these, it’s wise to use what they have on offer. If you’re organising your own tables – perhaps you’re getting married in a marquee or somewhere alternative like a converted barn – you can have your pick from the variety of styles available from furniture hire companies.
As a general rule, white or ivory tablecloths are the safest option, and you might choose to add a splash of colour with coloured napkins or colourful glassware. For a more dramatic look, experiment with coloured or patterned table linen. The key is not to overdo it by having mixing too many colours and patterns. The key to a stylish table is to keep things simple.
Table centrepieces

A centrepiece is an important addition to your tables. No matter how large each table is, it’s important to have a focal point in the centre. Elegant floral table centres are the most popular option, offering an excellent way of adding colour to your tables, and candles can be included to bring in some delicate light.
But flowers aren’t the only option — candles on their own are a romantic option, especially for those getting married in winter months. If you’re looking to keep costs down, a bowl containing sweets and favours is another option, or try having a simple glass vase holding a single, elegant bloom.
Top tips for alternative centrepieces
- a glass bowl lined with feathers and filled with chocolates
- a stack of favour boxes for your guests to help themselves
- a cake stand of fairy cakes
- church candles in different sizes
- balloons to suit your colour scheme
- buffet style food, so your guests can serve themselves at the table
- pens and colouring books for a children’s table
- a glass vase filled with battery operated fairy lights
- potted plants in prettily painted pots
It’s all in the details

No table would be complete without a few finishing touches. Table confetti is an easy way to add colour and interest to a table. A sprinkling of metallic confetti gives a glamorous look, while petals are perfect for a summer, country wedding. Feathers also make a wonderful table decoration, adding a touch of old-fashioned romance.
You can also add decorations to your napkins. A piece of ribbon tied in a bow is simple and stylish, and can bring in the rest of your colour scheme. Other details include menu cards, either for the table or for each individual, guest favours, place name cards and party items such as balloons, sparklers and table trivia.
