Before You Book

Sit down with the other half and work out the following:

  • What’s your budget? Don’t forget to include the flight, transfers, wedding package, any add on’s (food, spa treatments, excursions, spending money) and if you’ll be contributing to your guests expenses in any way.
  • How many people do you want to invite? Realistically how many will attend? Do you want it to be just the two of you? An intimate affair with your nearest and dearest or the whole clan?
  • What type of destination do you want? Sunny beach, cultural city, rustic countryside, picturesque mountain?
  • How far are you prepared to travel? Is a long haul flight practical?
  • What time of the year? Is it hurricane or rainy season? Is it a national holiday? Is it safe to travel to that destination?
  • Is your passport valid for when you want to travel? Your passport will most likely need to be valid for at least 6 months from the date of your return.
  • Will you need a Visa? Bare in mind that this can sometimes take a while.
  • Will you need vaccinations? Are you prepared to have a few injections for your dream wedding destination? Found out what you’ll need, how much they cost and how far in advance you’ll need them done.

What to Ask the Destination Wedding Specialist

Once you’ve chosen your specialist or narrowed it down to your favourites, find out the following from them:

  • What exactly is included in the wedding package? What will you need to organise yourself?
  • Where will the ceremony take place?  On the beach, in the garden, in a room, at a church?
  • How many weddings does the hotel do in a day? Many places offer exclusivity
  • How many guests can they accommodate? Think accommodation, ceremony, wedding breakfast.
  • What happens if it rains? Can the ceremony be moved in doors?
  • Ask for the wedding planner’s email address. This will save you on expensive overseas calls and make communicating with a time difference much easier.
  • What legal paper work will you need?
  • How long do you need to be in the country before the ceremony? Most countries have a waiting period, which is usually 2-5 working days, to ensure all your legal documents can be properly processed prior to your nuptials.
  • Get EVERYTHING in writing!

Once You’ve Booked Your Destination Wedding

  • Get insurance. This is a must!  Make sure you have travel and wedding insurance.
  • Sort out the legal paper work for the wedding. Your wedding planner should provide you with a list of what you will need.
  • Apply for your Visa if you need one. This can take some time so make sure it is at the top of your list of things to do.
  • Book your vaccinations. Ensure they are done at the appropriate time, so that they are in full effect when you go.
  • Order your wedding dress. A wedding dress purchased from a bridal gown shop will need to be ordered in advance. In some cases up to 6 months in advance so get looking now! If you don’t have the time to order, several high street stores provide beautiful off the peg dresses.
  • Order or rent the suits. Choose a suit that will be suitable for the weather. Linen suits are light and breathable or just keep it casual with trousers and a light cotton shirt.
  • Buy the rings. And put them somewhere safe! You don’t want to lose them on the journey.
