Getting Married in Cyprus

Why get married in Cyprus?

Sandy beaches and clear blue seas, it’s easy to see why so many couples choose Cyprus as their wedding destination. Known as the island of love and birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite, Cyprus offers couples guaranteed year‐round sunshine and stretches of stunning coast line for romantic strolls along the beach. Culture vultures will also be happy, with ancient ruins and temples to visit; you’ll never be bored in Cyprus.

What kind of wedding ceremony can I have here?

You can have either a civil or religious wedding ceremony in Cyprus, and both are legally recognised in the UK. There are many beautiful churches on the island, or alternatively you can choose to marry at your hotel, town hall or even on board a yacht as long as the venue is licensed by the Mayor. You can also choose to have a legal ceremony followed by a religious blessing. On the Greek side of Cyprus, your hotel must be located in the same town in which your marriage will take place. You must have a link with your home church, or at least be baptised in order to have a religious wedding in Cyprus, the number of religious ceremonies is restricted by the local church so it is very important to book the chosen church well in advance.

Do I need a visa to enter the country?

No.

What’s the wedding paperwork?

Residency ‐ You must give three full days’ notice of intent to marry.
Medical checks ‐ None required.
Proof of ID ‐ You will be required to appear in person at the Municipal Hall in which you wish to marry with your passports.
Divorced ‐ A certified copy of your decree absolute will be required if your previous marriage ended within sixty days of your application.
Widowed ‐ If you are widowed, you will be required to produce the death certificate of your former spouse.
Age restriction ‐ You must both be 18 years old or over. If aged under 18, parental consent is required in the form of a Statutory Declaration stamped and signed by a Solicitor.
Name change ‐ If you have changed your name by deed poll, you’ll need to supply legal proof, stamped and signed by a solicitor. This also applies if a married woman has reverted to her maiden name.
For Catholic Ceremonies ‐ You will need to provide proof of baptism and a letter from your parish priest.
For Anglican Ceremonies ‐ Either the Bride or Groom should produce a baptism certificate.
Adopted ‐ If you are adopted, you must produce your adoption certificate.
Witnesses ‐ You will need to provide photocopies of witnesses passports (front page).

How do I obtain a marriage license?

You must both must apply jointly, in person, to the Marriage Officer of the Municipality of the area in which you wish to marry, and complete a Notice of Marriage.

There are various documents to be presented and criteria to be satisfied for the Notice of Marriage to be properly completed.
They are the following:

Each person must present proof of identity, age and nationality: valid passport (and possibly birth certificate). If an applicant is under 18 years of age they must provide a letter from their parent or legal guardian.
Each person must affirm (by declaring on oath) that they "know of no impediment or other lawful hindrance to their marriage".
Each person must prove that they are single either by showing that they have never been married, or by proving that any previous marriage is over.

Once the Notice of Marriage is completed the ceremony must take place between 15 days and 3 months after the date on the notice. If the marriage has not taken place within three months, the marriage notice is no longer valid and the application process must be repeated.
