Becky and Glyn’s Real Life Wedding
Becky and Glyn
03/09/2005 – A Church in Hartlip
Marriott Hotel
How and when did you meet?
Glyn and I work together so after a few flirtatious emails and match making from work colleagues – we finally got it together!
How old are you both?
25.
Where, when and how did he (or you!) propose?
Glyn took me on a surprise trip to Madrid. He didn’t tell me where we were going until we were at the airport. He proposed to me in the Botanical Gardens and he went down on one knee – very romantic!
Did you have hen and stag celebrations?
I had two, a hen night for the mums at a Chinese restaurant and then dancing afterwards, and then I went away for a long weekend to Liverpool with 12 girls. Glyn went to Cardiff on a golfing weekend.
Did your groom help you with the wedding planning?
He helped me with the major decisions but let me get on with the finer details. I only had to ask and he would have done anything to help but I found that it was easier doing it myself!
Did you use confetti to plan your wedding? If so, how did the website help you?
Yes – the girls on the forum helped me with loads of ideas and I bought the favours from here.
Do you have a confetti web page?
No.
Did you buy any confetti products for your wedding? If so, did you visit a store, buy online or by mail order?
Bought the favour bags and lottery envelopes onsite.
Tell us about your outfit, and where you bought it.
It was a Maggie Sottero called Dion. It was stunning with ice blue crystals on the bodice with quite a long train. I knew it was ‘the one’ when I came out of the dressing room and the mums and Maid of Honour started crying!
Did you have bridesmaids? If so, who did you choose and what did they wear?
I had four bridesmaids – 2 whom I have known for 15 years and 2 that I have become close to in the last 5 years. One travelled from Canada to be with me which made the day that little bit more special. I had their dresses made as I wanted to find something they would all like; they looked stunning.
Who did your groom choose for his best man and ushers, and what did they wear?
His best man was his brother and the ushers were my brother and 3 of his closest friends. They all wore navy suits from Pronuptia with cream waistcoats. Our theme was blue and yellow so the ushers had cream cravats, the dads wore yellow cravats and Glyn and the best man wore blue.
Did you have a civil or religious ceremony?
Religious and the service was wonderful, very personal to us both.
Where did you hold your ceremony?
In a village called Hartlip in a tiny church – not sure how everyone got in!
Where did you hold your reception?
In a Marriott Hotel which was 20 minutes away from the church; they did a wonderful job.
Did you have any special wedding transport?
Two yellow Rolls Royces.
How many guests did you invite to your wedding, and did you have a separate evening guest list?
There were 120 guests invited to the day with a further 50 invited to the evening.
Did your reception have a particular theme in terms of colour or style?
No, we just had blue and yellow colours throughout. We had the thin tall vases for centre pieces with flowers.
How did you incorporate this in to your table settings?
Yellow Lottery envelopes and blue favour bags!
Did you give your guests favours?
Love hearts for the women and lottery scratch cards for the men.
Describe your flowers (bouquets and table decorations). Who was your florist?
I had yellow calla lilies and yellow roses in my bouquet and the bridesmaids had yellow roses. My mother-in-law helped with the flowers and she did an outstanding job.
What did you choose to have on your menu? Did you have an outside caterer or did your venue handle the catering?
The venue handled the catering and we had melon with berries, chicken with pepper and mushroom sauce and then a strawberry shortcake for dessert.
What did you choose for your wedding cake?
A friend of the family made the cake and we opted for a simple 3-tier square cake, plain but with real calla lilies on top to match my bouquet.
Did you have any entertainment during the day or evening?
We had a DJ – the dance floor was not empty for a second! Everyone was up dancing which was lovely.
Did you have a gift list? If so, who did you have your list with?
We asked for money or John Lewis vouchers as we have lived together for 2 years.
Where did you spend your first night and honeymoon? Who did you book your honeymoon with?
We stayed at the venue for our first night along with everyone else so we all had breakfast in the morning together. We went to South Africa on safari and then Mauritius for our honeymoon – amazing.
What was your most memorable moment of the day?
Every part of the day was amazing, from arriving in the church to seeing everyone up dancing at the end. Sitting in the car with my dad on our way to the church was special – he held my hand and asked if I was OK – then everyone in the village came out and waved as we drove past and people who I haven’t seen in years were at the church waiting to see me… I felt so special.
Did you experience any ‘nightmare’ moments in the run up to your wedding or on the day?
Nothing at all; whether anything did happen and it was just kept from me I don’t know, but from what I could see everything ran smoothly.
Is there anything you would do differently, or any advice you would give to other brides?
I would do nothing differently. Just enjoy your day and don’t get stressed. I was really relaxed in the morning, having a laugh with the bridesmaids, which I think helped. It goes so very quickly and if you spend the day worrying about every little thing, you will not appreciate the day or enjoy it; you only get this day once. Also choose your attendants wisely – they really did take care of things for me on the day. To do it again, we would have invited more people to the church.
