Cheryl and Ross 2008 Real Engagement Story
Date of proposal
25/12/06
How old were you both when you got engaged?
I was 22, Ross was 23.
Who proposed?
Ross.
How did your partner (or you) propose?
It was just after midnight on Christmas morning and we decided to open our presents in the living room with his parents (I was staying overnight at the time). There was one present that he held back and said that I could open it in his room on our own. I sat on his bed and he knelt on both knees in front of me. I had a feeling he was getting me a ring as I said I wanted jewellery for Christmas, but I had no idea it was THAT kind of ring! When I opened the box I said it was beautiful and tried it on my middle finger. Ross said no, took it off and slid it onto the fourth finger of my left hand. "But that’s my wedding finger," I gasped, my heart suddenly racing as I realised what was happening. "I know," he replied casually, "will you marry me?" I couldn’t believe how calm and collected he was. For a few minutes I sat in complete shock and started trembling. Still to this day he jokes about the state I went into, but we had only been going out for just over a year, and as much as I’d known for a while that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him, I had no idea he was planning to pop the question this soon! I started bubbling and squealed "yes!"
Who did you share the news of your engagement with first?
His parents, who were in the living room.
Describe your ring.
A princess cut diamond on a plain white gold band.
Did you help choose the ring?
No, but I couldn’t have chosen it better myself!
Did you have an engagement party?
No. The months just seemed to fly by, and by the time we’d let the news sink in a bit it was too late to have a party. We weren’t bothered about having one anyway, and this way we’ve been able to save a bit more for our house and the wedding.
When do you plan to marry?
24th July 2010. We’ve booked it in a lovely church where Ross’s parents were married near to where we live. The reception is being held at a modern country club in the next town.
What are you looking forward to the most about planning a wedding?
Absolutely everything. Like most women this has been a dream of mine since I was a wee girl, so I want to savour every moment, no matter how chaotic as I’ll only be doing it once. I think shopping for my dress will be the highlight though.
