Dawn and Steve’s Real Life Wedding

Dawn and Steve

How did you meet?
We knew each other vaguely to say hello to at college and then a few years later we got talking in a local pub and he asked me out (through his mate!).

Describe the marriage proposal.
After going out with each other for just over seven years he popped the question on Christmas Day – it was lovely and totally unexpected.

How long did you spend preparing for the day and how was it?
We got married 18 months after the proposal and started making arrangements soon after New Year. Once we had booked the church, venue and the main bits I could stop thinking and dreaming about it for a while!

What type of wedding ceremony did you have and where?
We had a traditional church wedding, on 8 June 2002, at the church where I was christened and where my parents still live. We had 118 family and friends to the day. I did have a bit of a different bride’s entrance tune as I thought ‘here comes the bride’ was a bit daunting! It only rained for five minutes, as we came out of the church and then it stopped for the rest of the day.

Where did you hold your reception and what was it like?
The reception was held at a local golf club. Our colour scheme was lilac and we had balloons and flowers as centrepieces and ‘just married’ love hearts as favours. Everything went very smoothly and everyone said what a lovely day it was.

Is there anything you’d change, with hindsight?
I can’t think of anything, it all went very well.

What advice would you give to couples currently planning their wedding?
Do as much preparation as you can beforehand as it stops you constantly thinking about it. I, surprisingly, wasn’t nervous at all. If possible try to book the honeymoon for a few days afterwards as if you go off straight away you could feel a little deflated. We enjoyed a family meal the day after the wedding, to remember the day, and then flew out on honeymoon on the Wednesday.

Is there any other detail that you would like to share?
Don’t worry about it too much as everything will fall into place. Try not to worry about your guests as they will be able to entertain themselves – just concentrate on having the best day together and remembering everything about it as it does fly by.
