Gemma and Nic Real Engagement Story
Nic and I originally met through work but I was with someone else at the time and wasn’t interested in anyone else. A dark haired, dark eyed and very persistent (and sexy) South African… Starting a new job was scary, but I soon met some great friends, and started going out a lot more. We’d all go down to the local for drinks then continue onto a pub.
Nic became my best friend, my shoulder to cry on, and the one who made me laugh. Nic was wonderful, we’d sit and talk for hours and hours when everyone else was dancing and drinking, we’d talk about life and travels, friends and past loves, everything we just clicked. One evening we ended up having a very long conversation about ‘us’, we both knew there was something there, but I had a boyfriend… I couldn’t be interested… could I?
These conversations went on for months and months. I was falling for him and I knew it. Nic had split up with his girlfriend just before we became friends, and was a single man for the first time in ages, I expected him to be well away chatting up everything with a skirt, but not at all- he just always stayed around his friends (us) politely declining offers from other women. He was always polite around us, opening doors for me, always refusing to let me buy my own drinks and food… the perfect man??? I decided he must be fake, no mans this good.
After this went on for about six months- he still hadn’t even looked at another woman, and my relationship (Inevitably) fell apart. I moved in with Nic and another friend. One-day Nic’s persistence and patience paid off. Things changed and one night everything just slotted into place, Nic and I became a couple- I was happier than I’ve ever been.
We’d been dating about 6 months and I had my driving test that day, Nic was taking me out to dinner that evening- it would either be congratulations, or commiserations. Luckily, I passed and as we headed off to the restaurant, we were both in roaring spirits. We sat at a table in a restaurant opposite Hampton Court Palace, over looking the River Thames, it was beautiful and the food and company was perfect, I just finished a beautiful main course when Nic started looking a bit worried, after scratching around in his pockets he came over to me, got down on one knee, “will you marry me” he asked, I looked into the most gorgeous eyes I’ve ever seen and said “yes” trying terribly hard not to cry.
It was the most romantic moment of my life. I felt like I was going to explode with happiness and just couldn’t stop smiling all night! We ordered a bottle of Bollinger and the waiters bought the cork out with a 10pence piece in it for luck, they also brought out our puddings with ‘Congratulations’ written across the top of the plate in chocolate icing, it was a perfect evening, and Nic’s my perfect man.
We are getting married at the beginning of this August and we will have been together for a year. I’m happier than I’ve ever been in my life. Nic is taking me to South Africa for our Honeymoon so I can see where he grew up. And I cant believe it, the man who seemed too good to be true… is true, he still opens my door for me, refuses to let me pay and is the true gentleman that I didn’t believe existed.
